As a self proclaimed self-love practitioner, I welcome every opportunity to learn more about the topic. I am also always clad and ready for an even deeper dive of exploration on the topic as well. My enthusiasm often reaches combustible levels for a variety of reasons. First, because of how well an understanding of the subject matter has served me personally in my journey from self neglect & pathological altruism to becoming a self-love practitioner and purveyor of its principles in support of my clients and my coaching practice.
In this post I want to connect the dots of self-care and self-love. I want to do that by presenting then unpacking the definition of self-love provided by the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation’s February 12, 2020 blog post which is a virtual smorgasbord on the subject. Let’s examine their definition for starters. They say that self-love is “a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth. Self-love means having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness. Self-love means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others. Self-love means not settling for less than you deserve.”

On a molecular level let’s focus on the phrase “that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth.” This phrase speaks to self care. Self-care is often mistaken for self -love. Self care are the things we do, the actions we take, the practices and hopefully the habits we establish that contribute to our state of being. The state of being is the self-love variable in the equation. Self-love is the byproduct, the culmination, the fruit that grows from the self-care seeds we plant. So, in essence, a correlation can be drawn. We can expect a boost in self -love that corresponds with the investment we make in self-care. Let’s embrace the definition as prescription. It does us no good to bathe ourselves in an endless shower of self care. That would be overkill and unnecessary. Instead the blog suggests we focus on self-care that will support our “physical, psychological and spiritual growth.” I can speak to the truth as well as the effectiveness of this aspect of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation’s post.

I’ve given myself to these things personally for the past several years and I have incorporated these principles into the coaching I give my clients. And, the result… I have experienced success & fulfillment in every area of my life. My clients have had the fuel and the substance they’ve needed to pursue & reach their goals, and my practice has been recognized for its growth and effectiveness on multiple levels. Recently my practice earned its 24th 5-Star client review! Self-love has been at the core, the very nucleus of things for me.
Self-love is one of the very best, if not the very best catalyst for personal & professional growth & development.
For the sake and support of my current and potential clients, I wanted to make the point that self-love is one of the very best, if not the very best catalyst for personal & professional growth & development. The client that understands this has tools that he or she can use to experience success at will on any area of their life they so desire. The coach that understands and can empower his or clients can do without limits. That next level coach can spark next level learning as well as next level living.
