E to the 3rd Power

Execute Earlier than Expected, E3

By James W. Falcon, MSOL, CLSSBB

This post is information taken directly from my stroke rehab recovery journal. And, yes, I really have one. It is based on a mindset I felt I was forced to develop in order to remain healthy mentally and emotionally during the time I spent in a rehab nursing facility recovery from a stroke.  Need-less-to-say, there were so very many variables at play in my journal.  I found myself not only challenged as a patient but as a person at my core.  I disparately needed an edge.  I desperately needed a card that I could read that provided responses to things I was told and to things I heard that were atomic bomb like eruptions in my soul and psyche.  Would I ever walk again?  Would I be able to regain my independence and ultimately my quality of life?  How normal will normal be once I was discharged from the rehab facility?  Would I look and feel disabled?  These and many questions were constantly swirling in my mind all on top of needing to being physically up to being fully engaged in each of rehab sessions.  Yup.  it was a lot.  And the good news is that my conclusions and my developments not only worked but carried me all the way home to resume a happy healthy life with my family.  Conclusions that I still rely on today.  Conclusions that I have incorporated into the coaching I now provide my clients.

E to the 3rd Power was certainly born out of desperation but also out of very simple everyday activities.

E to the 3rd Power was certainly born out of desperation but also out of very simple everyday activities.  As my time passed during my stay at the rehab facility, the focus shifted quickly and very noticeably to reinforcing my mobility.  Walking Standing and transferring from one surface to another were the focal points in the later ways of my stay especially the closer I got to the discharge date.  The stroke had significantly weakened me-my left side in particular.  So I had to learn compensatory strategies for how to move the right side of my body to compensate and to overcome to weakness and the limitation of my left side.  I did a lot of exercises to strengthen my legs.  One exercise in particular was the sit-to-stand exercise.  While my body was constantly being challenge, my mind was always under a fair amount of stress as well.  I was often accompanied by therapists and therapy assistance who aid me throughout my exercises.

To combat mental and emotional fatigue, I was forced to push my mind as hard as I pushed my body.

To combat mental and emotional fatigue, I was forced to push my mind as hard as I would body.  So whenever the therapy team would gather around for my sit to stand exercises, they would say, “OK Mr Falcon, I want you to stand up on 3” and they would begin to count.  Somewhere in the mix of things, I felt like I had to show them that I was still as exuberantly engaged in those later days as I was in the beginning.  So I pushed myself to stand up on 2 rather than wait until they reached 3.  Sometimes just to make the point, I would stand on 1. A point worth making here is that the therapist were fine with the progress I made.  I was only competing with myself at this point.  I was examining my engagement level and my output, and I decided on my own to dial things up.

The point was, I wanted to be more in control of things than I had been.  I wanted to be fully and completely in charge of the moment and of my destiny.  Me!  The patient.  And I did just that.  In the days following that first breakthrough moment I went hard on everything on every level.  If the exercise required 10 sit to stands, I’d 15.  If I was asked to do 15, I’d do them correctly but much faster than anticipated.  whatever was asked of me, I’d do more, and I’d do it faster.  What started to happen, is I’d finish my therapy sessions much sooner than expected.  And, I’d ask, “can I keep going?  Sometime the therapists would oblige me.  Others they would mention their concern of potentially showing me favoritism.

The point was, I wanted to be more in control of things than I had been.  I wanted to be fully and completely in charge of the moment and of my destiny.  Me!  The patient, not the therapists. I wanted to own the narrative. And, I did just that.

So, to acknowledge my enthusiasm, they would bring me light weight work out tools to my room or show me addition exercises that I could do on my own.  And I would spend hours using the equipment or doing the exercises.  Early in the morning all through the day and late at night and on weekends, My new goal was always, always, always to do much more than I was asked and to always execute earlier than expected.  It is a mindset I still have and am still in.  It’s a set of principles I now share with all of my clients.  It is a mindset that permeates everything I do.  Case in point, as of this blog post I have authored self-published 20 books.

Always, always, always, execute earlier than expected (or with more than expected) and take the reins of your destiny in hand!  Don’t keep the pace!  Set the pace!

Whenever I am asked if I will continue to write and when will i stop?  I always respond with “yes, I have “6 more drafts in queue.”  And, “why stop, I am challenged to search for more topics of interest, and search continues.”  The content of this blog post will serve as the basis for the draft for my 21st book.  Always, always, always, execute earlier than expected (or with more than expected) and take the reins of your destiny in hand!  Don’t keep the pace!  Set the pace!

So, what relevance if any, might this have for a coach and his or her clients.  The relevance is hammering the point home for clients to be and to remain enthusiastic in their goal pursuits.  And for coaches to help their clients to develop their own formulas, mantras and methods to ensure their own goal attainment.

So, what relevance if any might this have for a coach and his or her clients.  The relevance is hammering the point home for clients to be and to remain enthusiastic in their goal pursuits.  And for coaches to help their clients to develop their own formulas, mantras and methods to ensure their own goal attainment.  Insert the power and potential of affirmation and declaration statements and similar tools that can explored, and leverage by clients at the behest of their coaches to reach their goals.  As I often say, coaches can only be resources and effective guides for their clients as they are for themselves in their own goal pursuits.  And, as I also often say, anyone entertaining the idea of acquiring a coach should the perspective coach, what goals have they accomplished personally or professional recently?  How often do they set goals for themselves?  How a perspective coach answers those questions will provide so much more insight into the coach’s capability that his or her credentials.  The rationale: You can not impart what you do not possess!  That last sentence begs a for a follow up.  So, stay tuned.

…a coach that doesn’t have personal experience in the goal setting, goal pursuit, and goal attainment process has an empty well from which to draw and can’t possibly be effective in supporting clients…

In the interim, chew on this, the very definition of coaching according to Wikipedia is coaching is a form of development in which an experienced person, called a coach, supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training and guidance.  The feet on the street definition is as follows, a coach that does have personal experience in the goal setting, in the goal pursuit, and goal attainment process has an empty well from which to draw and can’t possibly be effective in supporting clients in that state of being.  Likewise the coach that frequently sets goals for him or herself and can talk candidly speak from his or her personal, recent experience of setting, pursuing and reaching their goals is much more qualified to coach more so than any coach with a litany of degrees & certifications. And, that is 20 plus years of coaching experience speaking at the risk of sounding like a braggard.  Coaching is a development and an empowering process. Coaches don’t train or write prescriptions. They empower.  Coaches help their clients understand the importance of not only finding the right answers but of formulating the right questions.  Coaches aid clients in developing roadmaps and timelines to help them reach their goals but they also help clients to understand the importance of developing contingencies as well.

Coaches work collaboratively to help goal pursuers find the answers to the what, the when, the where of any goal pursuit process.  They also empower pursuers to understand how vital knowing the why as well as the how is in the goal development process.  As the definition stated, coaching is a development process.  And sadly, if you aren’t undergoing development on your own of your own free will and choosing, you can’t effectively guide a client through territory you’ve never traveled.  It’s sad but sooo true.
