(A 2.4-minute read)

In my humble opinion,  it can never be stated enough. Thankfully, I am always poised & ready… to offer the definition of coaching. “Coaching is a form of development in which an experienced person, called a coach, supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training and guidance. The learner is sometimes called a coachee (Wikipedia, 2023).”

During the very first round of my Ph.D. studies, I stumbled across some very poignant information in my search of a deeper understanding of the science behind leadership intervention on performance improvement.  And, I have been dragging that information around with me ever since.

To my complete joy & delight I discovered that coaching is one of the best modalities to use to facilitate performance improvement.  After discovering that information, I dropped out of my studies, obtained a coaching certification and opened my own coaching practice.

Yes,  I am a huge fan of the discipline and the effectiveness of coaching because of the two E’s: empirical evidence and experience…sorry, I guess that would be the three E’s.  That experience as both a coachee and a coach.  Coaching is a powerful tool but there is one thing that couples‘ coaching (or therapy for that matter) cannot do.  As it relates to romantic relations, coaching cannot make one partner love another.  Coaching help partners to better exhibit behavior that is love-like however coaching does not turn people into love machines.  That drive, that heart condition., that capacity must be present and actively in play based on an individual partner’s willingness.  At the risk of overkill, allow me to explain it this way: couples’ coaching can save your relationship.  It can elevate the quality of certain outcomes.  But, it isn’t capable of turning your “boring Billy or Belinda” into Don Juan.  It will not make your “David Banner” an “”Incredible Hulk” to steal a reference from the Marvel Comics Universe.

Coaching can untangle and rewire your thinking about your relationship. It can challenge you to choose healthier pathways to reach your goals but it cannot change your make up-who and what you are at the core of your being.  That was a work forged by factors that are unfortunately beyond the reach of coaching. Sorry.  So, to all that have come to the realization that your partner doesn’t love you the way you had hoped or dreamt they would, please don’t think of coaching at the place to take nor drop off your disappointment of a partner  expecting to pick up a new and improved version.

…couples’ coaching is not a mail order process.  Coaches are not magicians but merely managers of a goal development, goal pursuit, goal attainment process…

That hope filled person needs a dating coach or relationship readiness coaching to gain a better understanding of how to do a better job at screening partnership candidates.  Couples’ coaching offers support, encouragement, motivation and accountability for couples in pursuit of partnership related goals.  Couples’ coaching is not a mail order process.  Coaches are not magicians but merely managers of a goal development, goal pursuit, goal attainment process that facilitates extra ordinary results not to mention is growing steadily in popularity (Relish, 2021).
