Long before the word coach described a profession — long before it referred to mentors, performance specialists, or executive partners — it described something much simpler, yet profoundly symbolic:
A vehicle designed to carry a person from where they were…to where they wanted to be.
The Origin: Kocs, Hungary
In the 15th century, in a small Hungarian village called Kocs, master craftsmen developed a new kind of covered wagon that was astonishingly advanced for its time.
These wagons were built for:
- comfort
- protection
- stability
- long-distance travel
- and above all, safe passage
They were called “kocsi” wagons — literally meaning “from Kocs.”As they spread across Europe, royalty and the wealthy used them for difficult journeys, trusting the vehicle to carry them to cities, borders, and frontiers they could not reach alone.
From this invention, the word “coach” entered the world as a term for transportation that takes a person from here to there.
England: Coaching Becomes Personal
Centuries later, England adopted a new use of the word.
Elite families hired private tutors to guide their children’s learning, development, and character formation. These tutors:
- instructed
- challenged
- corrected
- motivated
- and nurtured
They did not just pour information into a child —they carried them intellectually and personally from one level to the next.
These tutors became known as “coaches.”Not because they used wagons, but because they did the same essential work:
They moved a person forward — further than the person could go alone.
The Through-line Across History
Whether it was the:
- master craftsmen of Kocs building a vehicle to journey into new horizons,
or - the private tutors of England shaping future leaders one insight at a time,
the heart of coaching has always been about movement.
Forward.Upward.Inward.Outward.Toward something better.
