I was recently made aware of a demographic that I feel requires a spotlight. There is a segment of the population that is made up of persons 40-50 years old who are parents with either a minor child or an adult child. The additional aspect of the scenario is the fact that these people are caregivers of at least one aging parent. They are called the sandwich generation because they are caregivers that are sandwiched between their children and their parents. I was touched by this demographic because the stress they experience according to certain sources say is primarily rooted in the care they provide the grown child and not to the minor child nor to their aging parents. I found that fact fascinating. I would have imagined the source of their stress would be from either end of the equation
(the minor child or the aging parent). The other draw was in imagining the struggles that exist in maintaining a sense of self and not getting lost in the blackhole of caregiving. Expects say that the chief challenge the sandwich generation faces is in maintain a healthy life balance. When I read that I thought to myself that the sandwich generation could really use the help and support life coaches offer. Seeking a healthy balance in life is not just an aspiration of the sandwich generation of but of many people across many different demographics. For some that help may be needed temporarily. Others may need to lock in on a long term bases. In either case, the word balance screams for the help of a life coach and I am more than happy to oblige.
